Catalan eager to make one more run at world title

If there is one thing Filipino veteran Rene “The Challenger” Catalan has learned over the last two decades in competition, it is how to push himself.

And after he failed to snag the ONE Strawweight World Title from Joshua “The Passion” Pacio late last year, the 41-year-old believes he can make one more run for the gold before he rides into the sunset.

“It’s no secret that it’s my dream to become a World Champion in MMA, that is why I give my best every fight,” Catalan said about the only accolade missing from his illustrious career in combat sports.

“The truth is the loss only motivated me to do better and work my way up once again. It’s not the end of it.”

For Catalan, who will turn 42 before this year ends, he is grateful to be able to compete at this level for this long, and that is why he has no plans of wasting the opportunity.

“A lot of athletes at my age are already retired but I have a different mindset,” Catalan said.

“I have a goal and I plan to do everything in order to get back on track, and I hope to make it happen.”

For him to pull that off, Catalan believes changes must be made, and it starts with him being more of a student in addition to a teacher.

“I am not fond of making excuses, but I certainly felt the struggles of being an athlete and at the same time managing the entire team,” Catalan said.

“In my next match, I promise to be more of an athlete. One hundred percent focus in training so I can strengthen all of the aspects of my game and be more ready if given a chance to fight for the title again.”

If he wants to gain supremacy in the ONE Championship strawweight division, he knows he needs to act now. It will certainly be tough, but Catalan is up to the task.

“I am even more inspired now to take the top spot and earn another shot at a World Title,” Catalan said. “It won’t be any easier, but I plan to eradicate everything that is standing in my way.”
