Duterte Delivers First Speech as President
He acknowledged that some of his methods are seen as unorthodox, yet he guaranteed that his moves will be legal and that he will uphold the rule of law. Duterte’s first orders to his cabinet members were to ease the requirements in securing government permits and to avoid changing rules for government contracts that have been approved. He also expressed satisfaction over the initial talks between his appointed peace negotiators and the communist leaders. Duterte told the international community that his administration will honor treaties and obligations. He also offered his condolences to the people of Turkey following the terror attack in Istanbul. The new president’s speech lasted for about 15 minutes. Supreme Court Associate Justice Bienvenido Reyes administered Duterte’s oath as the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines.
