Swipe and you will find

Everything starts with an idea. Drawing from his own experiences, Joseph Phua, the young founder of the newest mobile app Paktor, notes that making connections without the fear of rejection is the proposition of the startup company. Members of media and VIPs were among the first to try the winning formula of the social engagement app Swipe, Match, Chat at Skye Lounge in Bonifacio Global City.

The history of the Singapore-based app, shares Phua, can be traced back to when he ended a long-term relationship. While keen on exploring all of his options, Phua admits there definitely was difficulty meeting new people—a tedious process that led him to take three key factors into consideration. Built around “locality, usability, and anonymity," Paktor was born upon a series of Phua’s evaluation of other apps and Web sites.

“It’s only natural for many of us to be afraid of being rejected, which is why we’re sometimes too shy to go out and meet new people,” he says. “With Paktor, you don’t experience rejection because you and your match are the only ones who know that you’ve made a connection, and you’re in control of whether you want to find out more about the other person.”

Proving to be a fuss-free, user-friendly smartphone application, Paktor has a simple two-click registration/confirmation process that utilizes the user’s existing Facebook account, thus giving freedom to new users to immediately begin browsing for new friends. No need for age-old sign-up pages requesting a user’s personality traits, likes and dislikes and what they were looking for in a person.

Paktor's user interface was also designed simple yet edgy. Instead of lengthy profiles, Paktor’s main page features simple 1”x1”-sized photos of potential friends within your immediate area, making use of one’s smartphone’s built-in GPS. Users are only able to view distance, friends in common, shared interests and additional photos. The users are then given the upper hand to get know the person in the photo in one swipe.

“The beauty of Paktor is that you can safely and anonymously view the profiles of other members and keep swiping until you find someone interesting. If that person also found your profile interesting, then you’ll be alerted that you’ve found a match! Now you have the option to start chatting privately with that person on the Paktor app to get to know him or her better,” adds Phua. “If you swipe right to ‘like’ another user, that person must also ‘like’ you back before a match is made. Once the match is made, a chat room pops up connecting the two users. This guarantees a certain level of privacy and so users are not bombarded with unwelcome messages.”

“We will also make sure to tailor the Paktor experience to the needs of Filipino users, and we’re lining up a number of exciting online and on-ground activities that our Filipino community will be sure to enjoy,” says Monique Espino, managing director of Marketing for the Philippines.
