Peace to boost Mindanao

The Agriculture Department said Friday peace in Mindanao will unlock the vast agricultural and economic potential of the region.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said the department had allocated financial resources for Mindanao to realize its bright prospects in food and agribusiness.

He said the existing government programs and interventions and assistance included the Mindanao Rural Development Program.

“The MRDP is geared towards improving incomes and food security in poor communities. Through MRDP, and with help from local government units, the DA implemented infrastructure, livelihood enterprises, and biodiversity conservation initiatives,” Alcala said.

Alcala said majority of the country’s agricultural exports come from Mindanao.

“It is the country’s premier food source and agribusiness hub, generating more than P4 billion worth of agricultural exports, accounting for 60 percent of total agri exports,” Alcala said.

Mindanao’s top exports include crude and refined coconut oil, banana and pineapple.
