Gonzales lifts Sparks to 1-0 win
Striker Freddy Gonzalez had a great reunion with his former team Tuesday night in the United Football League at the newly opened Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill, Taguig.
Gonzalez found his opening and flicked in the winning goal in the 22nd minute to power the Loyola Meralco Sparks to a 1-0 beating of Pachanga.
Later, Janrick Soriano slammed in a goal in the seventh minute of extra time to power Kaya past Green Archers United-Globe, 2-1, in a fight-marred late-evening encounter.
A counterattack, led by Phil Younghusband, who then passed the ball to Gonzalez, as he broke through the left side, allowed the Sparks to claim their second consecutive win.
“Pachanga played scrappy. We could not execute in the second half. Good thing we had a 1-0 cushion,” said Gonzalez over his emotional reunion with a squad he used to own.
On the other hand, seven cards and three ejections were given during the Kaya-Green Archers United-Globe game after fighting broke out some six minutes before regulation time ended.
With coach Maor Rosen watching from the gallery after he was thrown out for entering the field during the brawl, Soriano got the break he needed from a pass made by Toshiya Hosoe.
Kaya, which claimed its first win in the tournament, took the lead early off OJ Porteria’s goal at the 27th minute.
