Olivarez, PMMS tossers crush opponents
THE Olivarez College Sea Lions and the Philippine Merchant Marine School Mariners came away with tough wins yesterday in the 21st National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) volleyball tournament at the PMMS gymnasium in Las Piñas.
The Sea Lions relied on three veterans to score their last three points and put away the Emilio Aguinaldo College Vanguards, 25-20, 25-14, 25-21.
Meanwhile, the Mariners struck hard in the fifth set to get past the La Salle-Dasmarinas Patriots with a 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 23-25,15-9 upset win.
With their fourth win in five games, the Sea Lions were able to keep their hold on the solo lead in the men’s division.
On the other hand, the Mariners climbed to a share of second spot with the defending champion Patriots on a 3-2 win-loss record. PMMS drew big points from Midzfarh Muhammad and Paisal Bullong as it maintained a four-point lead, 9-5, in the last set.
The Sea Lions finally gained headway after a kill by liberal Aljon Losanta gave them a 23-21 advantage.
A drop shot by Mark Abitan, followed by Arvin Butacan’s ace handed the Sea Lions the victory.
“Kalahati ng score ng EAC ay as error namin. Nanibago ang mga bata as court. Mahangin at open. Sa blocking namin nasangga ang mga puntos nila,” said Sea Lions coach Edison Orcullo.
The Sea Lions will try to stay ahead when they clash with the Rizal Technological University Blue Thunders on Thursday at the RTU gymnasium in Mandaluyong.
