Mutya Johanna Datul crowned Miss Supranational 2013

Binibining Pilipinas-Supranational 2013 Mutya Johanna Datul gave the country a reason to celebrate when she bagged the Miss Supranational 2013 title, Saturday night in Minsk, Belarus, beating 82 other beauties from all over the world. 2013_sept11_show4The stunning 21-year-old, 5-foot-8 model and computer programmer student, won the judges over with her standout beauty, awesome smile and killer body. Organizers have added this year an underwear fashion portion wherein the girls wore panties and bras on stage in addition to the swimsuit competition in contrast to the Miss World 2013 that banned the wearing of bikinis to appease Muslim hardliners in host Indonesia. Miss Supranational pageant, a fast emerging beauty tilt, especially among Latinas and European beauties, was noticed last year with Elaine Kay Moll’s 3rd runner up finish.  Moll was Bb. Pilipinas 2012 first runner up to Miss Universe 2012 first runner up Janine Tugonon. This year, Bb. Pilipinas organization added the new title of Bb. Pilipinas Supranational with Datul becoming the first titlist. Datul, Miss Photogenic in Bb. Pilipinas 2012, quickly made her presence felt during the three-week competition earning for her the Miss Supranational Personality award, one of four pre-pageant special awards. Datul showcased her what she called ‘salagubang walk,’ an answer to Shamcey Supsup’s ‘tsunami walk’ and Tugonon’s ‘cobra walk.’ Miss Mexico Jacqueline Morales finished 1st runner-up) while Miss Turkey Leyla Kose was 2nd runner-up). Miss Indonesia Cok Istri Krisnada Widani settled for the 3rd runner-up post and Miss US Virgin Islands Esonica Veira was 4th runner-up. Datul was crowned by outgoing Miss Supranational 2012 Ekaterina Buraya of the host country of Belarus. Datul’s victory in a major ‘grandslam’ beauty pageant, came after Justine Gabionza’s and Lara Quigaman’s title conquests in the Miss Tourism Queen International 2006 and Miss International 2005, respectively, and hopefully, will rub on Megan Young who is currently in Indonesia vying for the country’s first Miss World crown. Born in Sta. Maria, a poor town in Isabela, Mutya dreamt as a little girl of becoming a beauty queen and to become a famous actress someday. She won Miss Isabela Tourism in 2010 and landed as semi finalist in Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012. —Eton B. Concepcion, Photo by Melvin Sia
