President Benigno Aquino III has conferred the National Scientist award to marine expert Gavino Trono Jr.
“Pre-eminent achievements by Filipinos in science and technology that have contributed to the progress of the country and humanity deserve the recognition and acknowledgment of our government in pursuit of its policy of furthering national development through enhanced scientific and technological research and development,” Aquino said in Proclamation 737.
“The work of Gavino Cajulao Trono Jr. PhD, in the field of Marine Science is reflective of this pre-eminence and of the national genius that contributes to science and technology and to the progress of the Philippines and the world.”
Trono’s extensive research activities benefited, among others, the local seaweed industry.
His 40-year career as a dedicated scientist in the field has resulted in 170 scientific and technical publications. His two-volume books entitled “Field Guide and Atlas of the Seaweed Resources of the Philippines” are considered the most authoritative books in the country on the seaweed flora.
Trono obtained his bachelor’s degree in botany from the University of the Philippines and his post-graduate degree from the University of Hawaii.
