Mindoro’s P1.93-B circumferential road covers 20-km gap

PUERTO GALERA, Oriental Mindoro—President Aquino has approved construction of a P1.93 billion Mindoro circumferential road, which has been delayed for two years because of opposition by a local politician and despite its enormous impact on trade and tourism in the area.

Aquino said the road will connect Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro and Abra de Ilog in Occidental Mindoro and “giginhawa ang bayan and trade, commerce and tourism will improve.”

“It doesn’t make sense to have roads that are not connected, isn’t it?” Aquino said, referring to the 20.33 kilometer gap between Puerto Galera and Abra de Ilog, which was  unfinished because of opposition from Abra de Ilog Mayor Eric Constantino.

Constantino questioned the road’s engineering design and claimed it was susceptible to soil erosion during the rainy season. The circumferential road will connect the gap that separates the two provinces.

‘Funding for the mountain road project was included in the P562.5 billion infrastructure budget next year. Aquino visited the province last Friday to attend an affair sponsored by the Philippine National Police.

Public Works and Highways Regional Director Subai Diron said the road’s  engineering design will be completed in September and construction will start in the last quarter this year or the first quarter of 2015.

“Its completion is calendared for 360 days,” he said.

Diron said work will include massive earthmoving operations and construction of four bridges that will interconnect mountain villages separated by rivers.
