Caraga hospitals lack doctors, staff

Sison, Surigao del Norte—Health Undersecretary Janette Garin in Sunday’s “DOH on Wheels” visit here said government hospitals in Caraga Region are ill-equipped and lack doctors and staff.

The assessment came up following a health forum press briefing where Caraga Regional Hospital was reported to have no radiologist at all.

CRH Andres Dolar Jr. disclosed the lack of specialists and nurses amid the growing number of patients.

“Most of the doctors I have tried to recruit prefer to work abroad or in private hospitals because of the better pay that’s why we go to different colleges and universities inviting fresh graduates to work with us but again no takers so far,” he said.

The same problem plagued Agusan del Norte Provincial Hospital which had only one surgeon who worked as a consultant.

Garin said the department was assessing the situation to find solutions.

“That’s why Secretary Enrique Ona and many of us at the Department of Health conceptualized DOH on Wheels to fill that gap of lack of doctors,” she said.

DOH Caraga regional director Dr. Minerva Molon said there were only two nationally funded medical facilities in the region—CHR in Surigao City and Adela Serra-Ty Memorial Hospital in Tandag City.

“This is because of the devolution with the health services delivery now in hands of respective local government units,” she said.

Molon noted that all provincial hospitals facing problems of delivery of basic health provisions are being administered and funded by LGUs and not the department.
