‘The Legal Wife’ is ABS-CBN’s riposte to other ‘wife’ soaps

By Isah V. Red | Jan. 29, 2014 at 06:01pm

THIS week saw the launch of new soap operas on the two leading TV networks, and funny it may seem, some of them, if not all, orbit around the “wife” character. On the Kapuso network, there’s The Borrowed Wife, but it airs in the afternoon, so there’s no conflict with the Kapamilya’s The Legal Wife as the network’s primary showcase in its primetime block, what with Angel Locsin starring in it with the network’s hottest actor du jour Jericho Rosales as the husband whom Angel, as the legal wife, is fighting to win back after he leaves her with her family who doesn’t approve of him. Add to that Rory Quintos and Dado Lumibao. The two are helping each other to make the series something to look forward to Monday to Friday.

“We want to make sure that our audience will follow our show not only because of the slapping scenes, but also because, through it, they learn how to deal with the problems of their own families, which they have been afraid to face,” says Quintos.

(bottom left) and Maja Salvador.

“Many of those in the audience will be able to connect with the characters of Monica (Angel), Nicole (Maja Salvador), Max (JC de Vera), and Adrian (Jericho), because their personal battles are true-to-life. Legal Wife is about the love and sacrifices that a person is willing to do for the sake of his family,” Lumibao explains.

Meanwhile, Angel, Maja, JC, and Echo reveal that The Legal Wife also made them discover a lot about themselves.

“Everyone has already experienced love and making mistakes. Because of my character Monica, I realized that I need to be strong in order to face all the trials in my life, especially if my family is affected,” says Angel.

For Echo, the plot of the series is a huge eye-opener for Filipino families. “Infidelity is such a sensitive topic, but I believe that this is the right time to make everyone understand why this happens, and why people end up in this situation,” he asserts.

Maja addsd while her character in the series is controversial, she believes that many people will be able to relate with Nicole. “There are many kinds of love, but there is this kind where somebody accepts your whole personality despite the things you did in the past,” she shares.

“I appreciate love for my family and for others now more than I used to because of my character Max’s ability to give everything he has got without asking for anything in return,” JC says.

The series is about Monica and Adrian, a married couple whose lives are thrown into  chaos because of a huge mistake.

Joem Bascon, Ahron Villena, Rio Locsin, Mark Gil, Maria Isabel Lopez, Bernard Palanca, and Christopher de Leon also star in the series that premiered last Monday.

Slapping Maja not easy

Angel Locsin and Maja Salvador are both thrilled with how their slapping scene in The Legal Wife trailer became a hot topic among TV audience and netizens. Angel confessed that it was difficult for her to do it.

“Slapping Maja, whom I consider my little sister, was not as easy as it looked like on screen. Actually, I really avoid having scenes like that because I don’t want to hurt my co-actors,” says Angel who is Monica, the wife of Adrian (Jericho), in the series.

Just like those who felt the ‘power slap’ of Angel, Maja strongly feels that the brave, real-life plot of The Legal Wife will get primetime audience hooked every night.

“My character and Angel’s, Jericho’s, JC’s all have their life battles. And I think every viewer can connect with any one of them. Because in real-life, we all experience love, pain and fighting back,” says Maja who is Nicole in the series.

Not just about adultery

Internationally acclaimed actor Jericho Rosales and new Kapamilya leading man JC de Vera are both excited about The Legal Wife.

“I’m really amazed with how emotionally attached viewers are already with the show, even if they only saw the trailers. But the story is more than what the title implies. It’s not just about exposing infidelity,” says Jericho about the big buzz created by the slapping scene of their show’s lead actresses Angel and Maja.

“We want viewers to understand the real problems faced by married men, their wives, their families, and their relationships with others,” Jericho explains.

Like Jericho, JC takes pride in his first-ever Kapamilya series and believes that the respective life battles of Monica (Angel), Nicole (Maja), Max (JC), and Adrian (Jericho) will keep viewers hooked on the show.

The Legal Wife will let viewers see life from various angles. And since it tackles true-to-life situations, every viewer can connect with the characters and their families. Their lines are so real that once you hear them, you will think when was the last time you said it,” shares JC.
