PH Gilas, Volcanoes make Asiad

By Peter Atencio | Jan. 11, 2014 at 12:01am

THE Gilas Pilipinas men’s basketball team and the Philippine Volcanoes men’s rugby team will be included in the national contingent to the 2014 Asian Games in Nanjing, China.

Philippine Sports Commission chairman Ricardo “Richie” Garcia, who is the chef de mission for the Games, said this as he bared his plans to prepare Team Philippines for the coming Asiad.

Garcia said in a radio interview that Gilas Pilipinas made it following its silver-medal finish in the last FIBA-Asia championships.

The Philippine Volcanoes’ improving performances in international sorties have also earned them their spot.

He added that the national women’s softball squad are also being considered.

Garcia said that he is aware of the time constraints in forming the national contingent since the Games are just eight months away.

But he believes that Team Philippines can still come up with its best performance.

Despite the limited time, programs which the agency has been implementing to prepare the athletes every year for international competitions are still in place.

This includes the quartering of athletes involved and the high altitude training stints in Baguio.

With these in place, he made assurances that Filipino athletes will not come back empty-handed from the Games.
