Oct. 28 no-work holiday

By Manila Standard Today | Oct. 02, 2013 at 12:00am
President Benigno Aquino III has declared October 28 a special non-working holiday for the barangay elections.

“It is important to give the people the fullest opportunity to participate in the said elections and exercise their right to vote,” the President said in Proclamation No. 656.

Aquino is poised to sign into law a measure postponing the Sangguniang Kabataan polls, which was supposed to be held simultaneously with the barangay elections.

“There’s been some arguments that there’s not enough time to prepare. The other thing is there has been a lot of criticisms about the SK elections. Taking all those into consideration, the President agreed to the bill by Congress to postpone the SK elections,” Presidential Communications Development Secretary Ramon Carandang said.

“Given the questions about how much the SK actually does, about the practicality of holding it even when the Commission on Elections says it may not be able to, it was wiser to postpone it,” Carandang said.

The measure approved by the bicameral committee provides for the holding of the next SK polls between October 28, 2014  and February 23, 2015.
