EU lauds Aquino govt human rights record

By Florante S. Solmerin | Jul. 13, 2013 at 12:01am
European Union Ambassador Guy Ledoux said on Friday that EU was satisfied with President Benigno Aquino III’s human rights program as he noted the significant decrease of extra-judicial killings during Aquino’s term.

In a news conference Thursday, Ledoux thanked the Philippine  government for its “cooperation with the European Union especially in the campaign for the promotion of human rights” and other interest sectors such as health.

“We very much appreciate the trust given by the Philippine government.

The reason we have EPJUST II (European Union-Philippine Justice Support Programme II) is that the assessment of EPJUST I has been positive,” Ledoux said.

He said he had an opportunity to personally meet Aquino before they implemented EPJUST I where he received a very positive comment from the President.

“I presented my credentials to Pres. Aquino and he thanked the EU for putting the EPJUST program. Now you have to put that into context. The EU is providing the funds to the Philippines in a very wide area such as in the health sector, health related assistance, support to civil society organizations, etc. The president had picked this particular project to thank the EU for its cooperation and such very significant project had an impact,” Ledoux said.

On Thursday, Ledoux was with Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II and Justice Sec. Leila de Lima to launch the EPJUST II with the theme “Justice for All: Enhancing Accessibility, Fighting Impunity.”

EU has pledged 10 million euros (P570 million) to fund the second phase of the project which includes reduction or elimination of human rights violations including extra-judicial killings and enforce disappearances.

Ledoux said they were satisfied with the enhanced knowledge and skills of the Scene of the Crime Operations  of the Philippine National Police’s with the use of crime scene kits that were provided by EPJUST I.
