One of the country’s fastest growing sports is undoubtedly triathlon which draws more and more adherents every day.
To address this growing segment of the population Century Tuna - the country’s leading and most trusted tuna brand - takes health and fitness to a whole new level as it once again brings the 5150 Triathlon Series to the Philippines.
Dubbed as the world’s largest Olympic distance triathlon series, 5150 Philippines is an extraordinarily demanding competition that challenges even the best and most seasoned triathletes. Set to happen on June 23 the race features a challenging course that involves a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike and a 10-kilometer run. All these will take place in picturesque Subic Bay, whose beautiful sceneries and pristine beaches provide a perfect backdrop for the event.
Century Tuna 5150 Triathlon Philippines is now on its second year with over 900 individual participants already signed up. These include two-time Ironman World Champion Chris McCormack, Luke McKenzie, Ben Allen, Jacqui Slack, and Belinda Granger.
Competing alongside these top triathletes are Filipino Elites like Century Tuna 5150 Triathlon Philippines defending champions John Leerams Chicano and Monica Torres, Kim Mangrobang, and national triathlon record holder, Olympic hopeful and Century Tuna Tri Hard member Nikko Huelgas.
Among the best in the international triathlon circuit, these triathletes represent 23 countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, United States of America, Singapore, France, Germany, Taiwan, Japan, and Philippines.
The 5150 Triathlon Series is a series of international races held all over the world which was launched by World Triathlon Corporation in 2010. It is the Olympic distance race and is meant to be the global standard distance in triathlon. The event offers the opportunity for mass participation in a more manageable race distance than the lung-busting longer distances.
The series takes the format of the standard or international distance triathlon which was put together by the fusion of three existing Olympic distance events into one triathlon. (1,500 meter open water swim, 40 kilometer cycling time trial and 10 kilometer road run). This started in 1989 and was officially included in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
The new 5150 global triathlon series is based on the same principles, culture and philosophy of the World Triathlon Corporation’s legendary IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events.
The name 5150 is based on the distance of the race: 1.5km swim + 40km cycle + 10km run = 51.50km.
Century Tuna is the race’s title sponsor which brought the event to the Philippines.
“We are very proud to be part of this world-class event. As Century Tuna is a brand that upholds the value of health and fitness, we think that it is only fitting that we support an event of this magnitude so that we can encourage more people to live a healthy lifestyle,” says Century Canning Corp. VP and general manager Greg Banzon, himself a seasoned triathlete.
