River monsters show up in Frontera Verde Pasig

By Carlos Ardosa | Apr. 24, 2013 at 12:01am
You don’t have to go to far to see rare river monsters.  They’re all under one roof and gathered in one sanctuary in Pasig City at Las Farolas which opens today.

“Las Farolas will act as a platform for educational and research activities through an interactive classroom to impart knowledge on aquatic life and sustainable means,” said Henry G. Babiera, president and chief executive of Moment Philippines Theme Park Planner and Management Corp.

He said Vice President Jejomar Binay and Mayor Robert Eusebio were invited to lead the rites at Frontera Verde Complex beside Tiendesitas in Barangay Ugong.

Las Farolas consists of two-storey barrels or hubs, with the first dedicated to biotopes and the second to all-glass aquariums, he said.

“It also has mini-lagoons.”

Babiera said booths on the ground floor will attend to the needs of hobbyists, enthusiasts and pet lovers alike on the care of Arowana, Arapaima, Alligator Gar, Wels Catfish, Australian Lungfish to name a few.

According to Babiera, Las Farolas is a concept of the late Rafael Ortigas who shared a special concern for conservation.

An all-family hub, the large-size aquarium also showcases replicas of centuries-old churches, tribal and cultural artifacts, and dwellings of indigenous people set in diorama along with Spanish period lighthouses, hence, the place’s name.

Visiting, collecting or simply enjoying the sight of river creatures found in the wild, fish lovers can catch details at <lasfarolas@yahoo.com> or call landlines 8268162 and 8203013.

Babiera heads PHILZOOS, a national organization of zoo and aquaria operators together with the newly-organized Ornamental Freshwater Breeders and Exporters Association of the Philippines. He also serves as Philippine Country Representative to the Board of Directors of the Southeast Asia Zoo and Aquaria Association.
