Swimming rivalry looms in Palaro

A looming rivalry among standouts in the National Capital Region is expected to shape up in the secondary girls' swimming competitions of the 2013 Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete.

Fourteen-year-old Chloe Daos, a student of Immaculate Conception Academy and a recent Philippine Sportswriters Association awardee, will be out to challenge the 15-year old Catherine Bondad for top honors when action begins on Tuesday.

“They fought it out for medals in the NCR eliminations. This could happen again in Dumaguete,” said Bondad’s coach Dondon Roxas.

During the NCR eliminations last February, Bondad, an incoming sophomore at San Beda College-Alabang, asserted herself against Daos by grabbing the golds in the 800-meter freestyle, the 400-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, the 200-meter freestyle and the 100-meter backstroke.

She is expected to be in top form again after finishing the 2012 Palarong Pambansa in Lingayen with a collection of six golds and a bronze, three of them won at the expense of another rival, Delia Cordero, who represented the Southern Tagalog region.

Daos settled for three golds, but she is expected to show the form which helped her sweep all her six events in NCR competitions of the Batang Pinoy last year.

Last September, Daos snared the girls' 15-under 100-meter butterfly and 800m free. She also ruled her division's 200m fly, 400m free, 200m free.

With Raissa Gavino, they shared Quezon City's top honors in the 4x50 medley relay.

The annual scholastic sport event organized by the Department of Education will be attended by around 10,000 participants from all 17 Regions, and with the Province of Negros Oriental will host the event.
