Smartphones to invade market

By Lailany P. Gomez | Apr. 01, 2013 at 12:01am
Smart Communications Inc. said over the weekend it expects an influx of “superphones” this year backed by the launching of long-term evolution handsets.

“Superphones—or smartphones that break the mould with the most advanced specifications—are helping propel the market forward. Future-forward features such as LTE connectivity, high powered processors, HD screens and cameras also elevate the demand for quality connectivity,” said Smart’s postpaid business head Kathy Carag.

A number of flagship LTE devices that are already available in the market are the iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy S4, the LG Optimus G, the Sony Xperia Z, the Nokia Lumia 920, the ZTE T82 and the Huawei Ascend D1.

These devices are powered by the latest multi-core processors and the latest versions of their respective mobile operating systems that rival even the most high-powered laptops today.

“We are expecting all major smartphone manufacturers to ramp up production of LTE devices especially with LTE users in Asia-Pacific expected to balloon to 72.1 million by the year’s end,” she said.

Carag added the rise in subscriber base had great implications, especially in the demand for rich mobile multimedia content such as HD videos, music, and photos—a trend which Smart has been prepared for as early as last year.

In mid-2012 Smart and parent company Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. completed a P67.1-billion network transformation program.

Smart has expanded LTE service in several areas across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao as it sets up new LTE cell sites nationwide.

Several areas in Davao City in Mindanao, Iloilo City, Cebu City, Mandaue City and Bacolod City in Visayas, and Baguio City, Laoag City, San Fernando City, Cabanatuan City, Urdaneta City, Antipolo City, Olongapo City, Tagaytay City and Dagupan City in Luzon now have access to Smart’s LTE service.

The deployment extends Smart LTE’s presence as it covers 46 cities and 69 municipalities nationwide.

Smart LTE is utilizing a comprehensive fiber optic cable network in the Philippines, with 54,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables installed across the country.
