Filipino boxer may be declared world champ

Courageous Filipino southpaw, undefeated World Boxing Organization minimum weight interim champion Merlito Sabillo,  who won the title with an eighth-round technical knockout of Colombian and No.1-ranked Luis De La Rosa on Sunday, may eventually be named full-fledged champion.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told the Manila Standard that reigning champion Moises Fuentes, who moved up in weight to challenge Donnie Nietes for his WBO light flyweight title and lost on a majority draw, may not return to the 105-weight division since he is having trouble making the weight.

Instead, Fuentes is keen on a rematch with Nietes.

Aldeguer said Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions in Mexico called him four days ago to work for a possible rematch with Nietes, which he indicated is a possibility.

At the same time, he said WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel doesn’t like the idea of interim championships and because of this, Sabillo may wind up as world champion should Fuentes stay at 108 pounds and relinquish his minimum weight title.

Although he predicted a Sabillo-Fuentes world title fight would be a terrific battle, Aldeguer said he was doubtful whether Fuentes can make the weight.
