The lawyer of former Palawan governor Joel Reyes, an accused in the Dr. Gerry Ortega slay case, called on Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to resolve the conflicting autopsy reports on Dennis Aranas, one of the witnesses, who died in the Quezon City district jail.
Councel Ferdinand Topacio said De Lima should “take a stand, exercise her leadership and put her house in order†over the findings of the National Bureau of Investigation and the Public Attorney’s Office.
“The justice department must make a categorical statement which of the two agencies should we believe in when it comes to the integrity of their forensic test results,†she told Manila Standard.
Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas has ordered another investigation into the death of Aranas, questioning the NBI report submitted to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology that ran counter to PAO’s medico-legal findings.
“Things will get more confusing with DILG’s order for another probe,†Topacio said, bucking talks that his client had a hand in Aranas death last Feb. 7.
On Jan. 24, 2011 at around 10:30 a.m., Ortega was shot dead in Barangay San Pedro, Palawan.
