Zonta 1 Web site and school of Rock

By Mila C. Espina | Feb. 14, 2013 at 06:01pm
Communication, be  it through social networking or music, reaches people easily. Cebu  is catching up with techno-information system. Just recently, the Zonta I, led by its president Lucille Colina, launched its Web site where  programs and thrusts of this pioneer women’s club could be viewed. Its You will have glimpses of the group’s Budlaan micro-financing, environment, day care and protection of women’s programs, youth, advocacies, not to mention some new involvements to feature the success stories of women, awarding women of distinction; and linkages with the academe and chambers. Any one may contribute through this website; or, even be a Zonta 1 member.

Gearing for the Diamond Year. The Zonta 1 officers and members.

Zonta 1 has gone a long way and looking forward to its diamond anniversary. I joined Zonta 1 in the early 80’s led by Zontians Amparito Rodil, Anita Sanchez and Tina Bonifacio. My contemporaries Merle Cunanan and Anit Verano; then past presidents  Flor Streegan, Tina Ebrada, Inday Avila, Baby Schaap, Tess Chan, Minnie Yuvienco, Matt Baguia, Fe Necesario, Fina Tanchan, Stella Bernabe, and presently Lucille Colina, saw how the Zontians expanded their community involvement . Unknown to some, Zonta 1 was one of the few pioneers in Day Care centers,  youth and education (Golden Zee Club) and scholarship programs (with Tanchan Foundation).  It was the lead group in the  establishment of The PINK CENTER, now called  Women and Children Friendly Center presently run by the doctors and staff of Vicente Sotto hospital and constantly inspired by the moral and financial support of founder and first Area Director Dr. Zuga Yuvienco whose solicitation of assistance from Senator Tito Sotto and other benefactors started the project, with the support of the City and Province of Cebu. The Zontians believe in team management, so leadership of the Center follows the shifting procedure.  The President for the initial years was Zonta 2 (Marilou Canizares). By 2014, or earlier, the Zonta 1  (President to be designated ) will take over.

One legacy of Zonta 1 is the formation of Zonta 2 which has become successful in winning the Area Directorship (Elena Young, Mariter Klepp, Flor Miel) in the Zonta International. This year its Zonta 1 Anita Sanchez, who, at long last, accepted the challenge .

The Zonta 1 holds the distinction of wielding big fund raising projects like the Glamour and Glitz 1 & 2; Women Legends and A Night at the Oscars; forum on women and environment; legal issues affecting women; success stories; linking with FORWARD (organized by Beling Go Ching hai and this writer), the City and the Province of Cebu, and the academe and business groups. With Z Felisa Chiongbian  around, how could we fail? So, Zontians, carry on!!!!

School of rock

Ready to rock Cebu. Erwin and Pia Quisido and Anna and Adam Brown.

The musical talents of Cebu, in songs, dances, choral and cultural performances, have reaped international and national awards. Our performers have amazed the world, like Pilita Corrales, Dulce, Anna Fegi, Chad Borja, Jimmy Marquez, Vernie Varga, Elizabeth Ramsey and Jaya, among so many others and so it would not be difficult to make Cebu the Entertainment Hub. Yet, we need to hone talents and give them venues to perform. So, the School of Rock was born out of the partnership of the Salonga School of Music and Anna and Adam Brown. The lines are drawn clearly as Adam shares his skills in teaching and crafting the curriculum; Anna shares her musical experience ; and the technical, marketing and managerial skills of the Salonga clan. Anna describes it as “ bringing music lessons on stage!” Thus, expect more shows at Ayala where groups or bands will shine! Before Anna married, she consulted me about the chance of establishing her own school of music in Cebu which was good. It’s time to translate into a business venture all her experiences from USJR where she did Sound of Music; Ms. Saigon, etc; to Manila, Hongkong Disneyland to cruising.  And as a starter, Anna’s linkage with the Salonga’s (Pia and Erwin Quisido) will gain her a wealth of experience. The School teaches basic lessons in musical instruments and it is not true that it only accepts those who already knows the musical arts.

Think, speak and act like a pro

The Asian College of Technology (ACT) continues its series of seminars to enrich classroom lessons.  It was the turn of the College of Hospitality Management under dean Glady M. Gajudo, assisted by ACT instructors Ernesto Labra, Jr., and Lovella Carillo, to hold an interactive seminar of professionalism and work ethics through Speechcom International. For some 200 participants, the learning modules will help them tackle their professions with better work-values and decorum.  President Rodrigo Abellanosa has endorsed human resources learning experiences as a cutting edge to excel in their academic preparedness.
