600-MW coal plant connected to the grid

National Grid Corp. of the Philippines said Wednesday it completed the P229-million power transmission project that will permanently connect the 600-megawatt coal-fired power plant of US firm GN Power Ltd. in Mariveles, Bataan to the Luzon grid.

National Grid said in a statement the Mariveles coal transmission reinforcement project would also support GN Power’s future 600-MW expansion.

National Grid said it completed the project to accommodate the additional capacity from GN Power and serve the existing 620-MW Limay power plant of PanAsia Energy Holdings in Limay, Bataan.

The project involves the construction of the new Mariveles-BCCPP 230-kiloVolt (kV) transmission line, reconductoring of the existing Limay-Hermosa 230-kV line and upgrading of the Limay substation.

The new transmission line, a 230-kV line from Mariveles to Limay, spans 38 circuit kilometers and connects the new coal power plant to the Luzon grid via the Bataan combined cycle power plant station B in Limay.

It is also designed to transmit the additional 600-MW capacity that GN Power plans to produce in the future on top of its current 600-MW capacity which is expected to be fully operational by March.

GN Power plans to invest an additional $1 billion for its 600-MW expansion project.

National Grid earlier completed a temporary bypass line on August 1, 2012 to connect the coal power plant to the grid while the permanent line—the Mariveles-Bataan Combined Cycle line— was under construction.

Line 2 of the Mariveles-Bataan combined cycle line was finally energized on Dec. 23 last year while Line 1 was energized on Jan. 21 this year.
