Melindo gets big break

By MST News | Feb. 02, 2013 at 12:01am
Undefeated World Boxing Organization’s No.1-ranked Milan Melindo will see action on the big Top Rank card  in Macau on April 6, when WBO/World Boxing Association two-division champion Brian Viloria will defend his title against Mexico’s Juan Francisco Estrada.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told the Manila Standard that he had spoken to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who agreed to have Melindo on the undercard against an Asian or Mexican opponent.

However, there’s no word on who the likely opponent will be.

The WBO directed Viloria to defend his title against Melindo in a mandatory title fight, but the ALA Promotions president had agreed to allow Viloria a voluntary defense, realizing that a Viloria-Melindo title fight, although bound to be a classic, didn’t make sense financially.

Besides, both Viloria and Melindo don’t wish to face each other being countrymen unless they have no choice.

Melindo, who has a record of 28-0 with 11 knockouts, is the reigning WBO International flyweight champion having won the vacant title with a first-round knockout of Jesus Geles last June 20, dropping Geles the former light flyweight champion who moved up to flyweight, but failed to make the weight and was dropped three times in the opening round.
