Blazin’ up the Highlands

By MST News | Feb. 01, 2013 at 12:02am
Chevy's Trailblazer kicks up dirt to carve a new path.

Chevrolet rolls off to an auspicious start with the recent driving event held in the windy and exclusive enclave of Tagaytay Highlands. With an eye out on competitors such as Mitsubishi and Hyundai the The Covenant Car Company launched the Trailblazer SUV and subcompact Sonic sedan in the rough and rugged terrain of Highlands.

The launching was preceded by a hearty breakfast at Jay J’s at the Home Depot Ortigas. Then the motoring media hied off to the venue led by The Covenant Car Company president and Managing Director  Albert Arcilla.

As one of the brand’s most recognizable nameplates, the Trailblazer is Chevrolet’s bet for the mid-size SUV market. Penned by Chevrolet Chief Designer Carlos Barba, the Trailblazer is a 7-seater Diesel SUV boasting of class-leading styling cues, sophisticated technology and an exceptional ride even on rough terrains. The Sonic on the other hand is set to lock horns with the Toyota Vios, Honda City, and Hyundai Accent is available in sedan and hatchback variants powered by a zippy 1400cc engine and a class-leading 6-speed AT transmission. Blessed with a sporty and aggressive front end, this Chevy subcompact provides a balanced combination of quality performance and an impressive interior with high-tech comfort and convenience features. Each new model offers a big stride towards achieving Chevrolet’s goal to provide world-class vehicles which are tailor-fit to the needs and wants of discerning customers. ““This event is a glimpse of what Chevrolet has in-store for the local market this year. We gained a 20% increase in sales in 2012 and these two new models along with our existing product line puts us on a solid footing to grow a stronger brand and business this 2013. With the Trailblazer and the Sonic leading the way, we hope to capture the market’s need and desire for a performance-oriented set of lifestyle vehicles,” explains Arcilla.

Participants of the Media Ride and Drive were treated to an excursion that included activities to test the capabilities of the Sonic and Trailblazer, plus some personalized leisure activities along with the great food and the cool weather that comes with a trip to Tagaytay Highlands.

TCCI Marketing Director Lyn Buena strikes aaboard the Chevy Sonic.

Upon our arrival at the Highlands by mid-morning, a massive (12-foot high) Trailblazer sign situated at the parking lot of the Highlander Steakhouse greeted us, dictating the flow of events throughout the day. At the same time, a similar huge Sonic sign was put up at the Cotswold Village, the driving venue for the day long Chevy experience. The event started out with a sumptuous feast at the famous Highlands Steakhouse prepared by Chef Renato Acol.

In the main event, which was the ride and drive segment, Chevrolet showcased the Trailblazer’s class leading features such as the hill descent control, hill start assist, among others through an off-road driving activity at the Katsura Subdivision of Tagaytay Highlands. What made the off-road experience memorable was my co-driver, rally ace and racing legend Jojo Silverio who called the shots as my navigator. At the other end of the track, the Sonic’s excellent handling and nimble driving dynamics were tested to the hilt by way of a driving course designed by George and Louis Ramirez of the famous Scuderia Ramirez racing clan. Motoring hacks took turns behind the wheel around the gymkhana course with many fun twists and sharp turns adding a sense of excitement for lead footed motoring hacks.
